Act

Adopt results (in public and private decision-making)

This step involves the uptake and integration of the results, in particular the developed solutions and recommendations (cf. "Develop solutions or recommendations"), of the ecosystem assessment into the relevant decision-making, management and policy processes, potentially catalysing transformative change. This can include the incorporation of results into amongst others local, regional, or national planning instruments, public or private strategies, environmental regulations, or corporate sustainability policies. This step helps to ensure that the assessment results are used to inform and improve the decisions and actions of the public and private actors, such as governments, businesses, NGOs, communities, etc. and, thus, lead to tangible influence on real-world decisions.

Justice

Link to Justice

Justice here is about whose priorities shape actual decisions. Adoption can either entrench existing power imbalances or redistribute influence and benefits.

Dimensions addressed

Recognitional: ensure decision-making reflects diverse values and not just dominant economic or political interests.

Participatory: co-develop adoption pathways with stakeholders, especially marginalised groups.

Distributive: analyse and balance how decisions distribute costs, risks, and benefits across groups.

Contextual: tailor adoption to political and institutional realities while working to reduce structural inequities.

Why this matters

Moves results from paper to practice fairly.

Prevents capture of assessment outcomes by powerful actors.

Ensures adoption contributes to justice-oriented transformations.
